Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics is a leading college affiliated to Mumbai University. It was established in 1964 by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), a professionally managed trust with a large number of prestigious academic institutions, under its umbrella. 
SVKM is the brain child of leading industrialists and socially conscious philanthropists who wanted to contribute to the local area by founding educational institutions .The Mandal has an extensive local base with a large primary membership.
The Status of NM as a minority institution for the Gujarati Linguistic Community, is a significant achievement in providing access to students from the Gujarati Speaking Community, to the most coveted college in the Commerce and Business Management Streams.
Although the College started by focusing on education to make students self-reliant and to prepare them for careers in the commerce field, it gradually extended the scope of its activities to include the moulding of the overall personality of the students. With greater competition in every walk of life it has become a necessity to prepare students to shine in all areas.
Today, Narsee Monjee College is one of the Leading Colleges in the Commerce stream in Mumbai, by assimilating to global development in education, and adopting the technology. N M College was ranked as the top college amongst commerce colleges affiliated to University of Mumbai in a survey conducted in June 2010 by AC Nielsen ORG Marg for the India Today Magazine.
The College has earned laurels in the field of academics, as well as in extra and co-curricular activities. Every year, about half the number of students in the merit list of HSC Board, are from this college. The College result is 99.83% against the board passing percentage of 71.78%. 77% of the students have passed with Distinction and 98% of the students have secured at least First Class. At the HSC Vocational Examinations the college results have been 10% or last few years. For the Examination conducted in March 2010, the results are 100% again. At the TYBCOM examinations, there are 6 rankers amongst the top 10 at University of Mumbai. 94% of the students have secured at least a first class. Students of the BMS Section have also brought laurels to the college and have done us proud with their excellent performance. Since the inception of the course, N M College has always bagged the top ranks. Amongst the first ten rankers at the BMS Examinations conducted in March 2010, 7 students were from N M College. 97% of the students have secured at least First Class. 88% of the students have passed in Distinction. Students from NM perform well not only at the college level, but also in post-graduation examinations in India and abroad, also at the corporate level. N M has a long list of distinguished alumni to prove this.
Today, training of students in management skills such as leadership and organizational ability is provided practically by managing activities of a large number of cultural associations / clubs , and the intercollegiate festivals – “Umang”, which in its Eleventh year, already boasts of playing host to participants and audience of over 40,000 and “Drishti” which is in its twelfth year now. N M students excel in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities too. The literary, cultural and other associations organize events throughout the year and the college encourages students to actively participate in them. N M students have represented the college and the University at the State Level, National Level and Inter National Level and have won many trophies and championships.
From the academic year 2010-2011, SVKM’s Narsee Monjee College is offering three new courses viz. Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting & Finance), Bachelor of Commerce (Banking & Insurance) and Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Market) at the undergraduate level and the Master’s Degree in Commerce i.e. M.Com. (Advance Accountancy) at the post graduate level.
